As State Department spokesperson under the Biden administration, Matthew Miller routinely denied Israel’s war crimes to the press and downplayed mass death in Gaza. 

On October 10, 2023, Miller refused to acknowledge the number of Palestinian children who had been killed since October 7. 

When asked in summer 2024 about the state of ceasefire talks, Miller blamed Hamas for stalled ceasefire talks, without ever blaming Netanyahu despite public reports of his refusals to agree to a ceasefire. Miller also acknowledged a report at the time of Israeli war crimes, carefully avoiding the term “war crime” and declining to list any potential consequences, like sanctions or an arms embargo. 

And in a September 2024 press conference, Miller dismissed a reporter’s question about a July 2024 report in the peer-reviewed science journal The Lancet revealing that the death toll in Gaza could exceed 186,000—a number far greater than the 38,000 counted at the time by Gaza’s Health Ministry. In response, Miller prevaricated, and talked about a “horrific human tragedy” with no recognition of the U.S. or Israeli role in inflicting this tragedy.
